About Michael D. Young

The Michael D. Young Internship is named to honor Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Michael D. Young (shown above, far left, with the 2016-17 cohort). Dr. Young retired from UCSB in January 2015 after 25 years of service to the students and staff. Vice Chancellor Young was beloved and respected for his genuine warmth, commitment to supporting students, and his efforts to improve the quality of life for our campus community.

UC President Janet Napolitano wrote in a tribute to Dr. Young, “On behalf of the University of California community, our heartfelt and deep respect for your many accomplishments, not least of which were your dedicated efforts to call attention to student mental health issues and to provide funding for the University’s efforts to help students in distress.”

Former Associated Students President Harrison Weber’s tribute reflected Dr. Young’s commitment to students, “As vice chancellor, you repeatedly engaged in a visionary charge to ensure that students were prioritized amid the myriad (and often conflicting) interests of the University.”
